Joan was born and raised in Iowa and educated at the University of Iowa.

As a Navy wife she experienced may moves, seved on various Navy Commissary, Exchange and Officer Club Boards and volunteered endless hours for Navy Relief.  She taught high school in Alexandria, Virginia.

Joan came to San Diego via Newport, Rhode Island; Key West and Jacksonville, Forida; Lawrence, Kansas; Honolulu, Hawaii;, Montery, Long Beach, Huntington Beach, Seal Beach and Garden Grove, California; Alexandria and Virginia Beach, Virginia; Seattle Washington and Lexington Park, Maryland.  Joan has three children and four grandhildren who live in St. Paul, Minnesota, Iowa City Iowa and Albuquerque, New Mexico.
